SH2-308 – Dolphin Head Nebula

Two takes on the target I have spent most of January on .

Commonly known as the Dolphin Head Nebula, or more formally SH2-308, this nebula is located just south of Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, in the constellation Canis Major (Big Dog)

The nebula surrounds the the star EZ Canis Major (EZ CMa) which is a very hot luminous Wolf-Rayet star. The bubble was formed by EZ CMa ejecting its outer layer around 70,000 years ago and it’s solar winds then blowing the gases out, collecting material as it goes. EZ CMa is expected to eventually go supernova.

SH2-308 is roughly 4,530 light years away and is 60 light years across.

The first image is standard use of the Hydrogen and Oxygen filters given the combination of red and teal. The second tweaks the blending a combination of yellow and teal, which I quite like ???? .

This is the standard HOO narrowband combination but with RGB stars.

This is the tweaked colour balance with the reds coming through as yellow, which I like :).
