Located in the constellation Lepus (The Hare), M79 is a globular cluster approximately 42,000 light years from Earth. M79 is unusual in that it is further from the galactic centre than Earth (approx 60 kly) and it is thought that it did not originate in the milky way, but rather may have been captured from the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy – though this is contentious and still being debated.
